Important Snack Choices

After meeting with my endocrinology team, they encouraged me to alter my eating habits in a major way. A goal for managing diabetes is keeping my glucose levels steady. In a 24-hour cycle, many things can affect the glucose levels, metabolism, exercise, stress, mood, drinking water, or alcohol. It’s important to remain hydrated so plenty of water is good. Keeping a good metabolic rate is also important. For me I’ve modified my eating to smaller portions and snacks. I try to eat at the same times throughout the day and get a good night sleep – also going to bed and rising in the morning at the same time. Once my foot is healed I plan to introduce regular exercise back into my routine.

For now, my focus has been on nutrition and scheduled meals and snacks. Here is a typical breakdown of my day. I try to eat something about every 3 hours. Eating more often and smaller portions seems to have jump started my metabolism as I continue to lose weight and don’t feel hungry. I do have an appetite when it’s time for my next meal.

Breakfast around 5:30 AM

Morning snack around 9:00 AM

Lunch around 12:00 PM

Afternoon snack around 3:00 PM

Dinner around 6:00 PM

Light snack around 9:00 PM

A snack I’ve come to enjoy a lot, a medium size apple and a few slices of sharp cheddar cheese. This option is low in carbs and includes some protein. I’ve come to discover the verities of apples which have different flavors and texture.

The apple tool in the illustration makes preparation a breeze and provides a nice service “tray.”
